My Gear

Rickenbacker bass This is a White Rickenbacker 4001 'Stereo' bass guitar. I have an original 1979 model with all it's original features intact. It still plays & sounds great!

It has two pick-ups which can be split by using the rickosound output jack. The standard jack provides a mono output with each pickup selectable by the three position selection switch.

Each pickup has a great tone control variation providing the ability to produce either a  smooth bass or that  unmistakable Rick sound used so extensively by Yes bassist Chris Squire.

I use Rotasound strings for great sustain and sound.

Ibanez 5 string bass

This is my Ibanez EDB555 bass guitar, it's a Walnut finish 5 String which has a great depth and range of sounds within easy reach.

It has a light ash body and rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays. You get a fantastically light well balanced instrument which fits really snug due to the contoured body shape and full access to all 24 frets in a very playable, great sounding bass guitar.

The pick up controls & EQ (Volume, Balance, Bass Boost/Cut, Treble Boost/Cut) give that really good range of sounds needed for the type of music we play in Time Will Tell.

I think it's great!

Trace-elliott 7215 SMC This is my Trace Elliott 7215SMC. It's green, it's loud and its good.

It's a 300 watt RMS combo featuring SMC pre amp with the traditional Trace Elliott Pre-shape, 7 Band Graphic Equaliser & Dual Band Compressor. All these features are switchable in or out. It has 1x15" speaker, Pre/post EQ balanced DI Out, Effects Send & Return loop, Line Out (which can also be used as power amp in) and an Extension speaker output (8 Ohm).

Hofner violin bass This is a Hofner 'violin' 500/1 'Beatle Bass. I bought my one back in 1977 for a very small sum. My particular bass is a little worse for wear but has all the fittings in tact, plays very well and sounds great.

It has a Three piece Maple-Beech-Maple neck and a Rosewood Fingerboard, 22 Frets and is a short 30" scale (great for fast runs). The Top is German Spruce with the Back and Sides of Flamed Anigree.   The Pickups are Vintage "Staple Top" pickups and all the hardware is Nickel Plated. The Finish is an Antique Brown Sunburst and the mother of pearl inlays set it off a treat.

Boss ME8B FX pedal

This is my Boss ME-8B FX pedal. The ME-8B is a floor pedal type multi effect specifically designed for use with electric bass. The bass optimised effects include reverb, chorus, bass overdrive, pitch shift, EQ and compression. Also included is a unique effect called "Defretter" which is supposed to make a fretted bass sound like a fretless. Personally I don't think this works too well. Better to learn and use a fretless bass. It has 32 pre-set patches & 32 user patch locations where you can store your own sounds, a Real-time control of various effects via built-in control pedal (like ring modulation & pitch shift control). It uses 8-bit Adaptive Focus Method A/D conversion and 20-bit D/A conversion and has a built in chromatic tuner.

I like it and it works well. A really good pedal.

My Life

I was born in Leytonstone, London during July '59 and grew up there until I was 10 Years old when with my family I moved to a small town named Hadleigh in South East Essex, just a few miles from Southend-on-sea.

I left school, started work & there I met Tony Machon, keyboard player with Time Will Tell, I discovered Tony played keyboards and that a friend of His Steve Liberty, guitarist with Time Will Tell, played electric guitar. I was learning bass at the time so it seemed a good idea to get together and see what happened. Well we started jamming and soon developed our own style of music and began writing our own material as a three piece band.

Steve went off to University and I continued jamming with Tony and a few others during this period. We used to visit for weekends and mess around in the University Music Studios. Unfortunately I only have a few old tapes of these sessions which were great fun and quite productive.  It was while Steve was at UEA that he became a Christian.

Initially I was not interested in Steve's new found faith and values, however during a weekend visit to UEA a young guy was talking about Jesus Christ, The Son Of God, in the bar area and although I wasn't sure what to make it at the time I found myself asking him questions at the end and taking away a small booklet called 'Journey into Life'. When I got home I found a Bible and decided that I should read this and see what it was all about. Like most good books the best bit is at the end so I read the last book in the Bible 'The Revelation of Jesus Christ'. This gave me quite a shock as I could see that it was describing the same world as I was living in, it's values and lifestyle and graphically described the end to which I was heading.

It also described vividly what the Christian, those who believed in and followed Jesus Christ, could expect for eternity and this was much more desirable. I decided to find out more. I read the good news about Jesus, Who He is, what He did, why he did it and the results of his life, death and resurrection in the 'Gospel of John' and how I needed to respond by reading the 'Journey into Life' booklet.

On a Saturday night in February 1978 I put my faith and trust in Jesus Christ and became a Christian, one of His disciples, it was the best decision I ever made.

This was the beginning of a new Life. I begun to attend the local church at the top of the road in which I lived and my life began to change and old habits fell away. I got involved with a band named 'Freedom' playing bass of course!. During this stage of my life I moved to Rayleigh where I now live, I met Debbie who became my wife in 1983. Our first daughter Nicola was born in 1986 and things were going great.

However during 1988 while Debbie was expecting our second daughter I was very ill and ended up in hospital having major surgery to rectify a serious internal problem. The operation was a success but my body was in shock. I didn't respond to medication and ended up facing another visit to the operating theatre (and possibly worse).   The Church started to pray on my behalf and during the night at about 2:00am I awoke sat on the edge of my bed and knew I had been healed. In the morning the doctors and surgeons turned up at my bedside to prepare me for theatre. I was not there. To their complete amazement I was walking back down the corridor completely well. I'll never forget their faces. Needless to say I was discharged within three days and back home. Thank you Lord Jesus !

Teresa was born in February 1989, the rest is a long story.

I now attend Christian Growth Centre Rayleigh, and am a member of the music team (playing bass of course). You can find out more about CGC Rayleigh by clicking here.

If you would like to know more about my bass playing, my gear, my faith or about the Lord Jesus Christ and how to respond to Him then mail me by clicking here.
